Hosting · Education
Untangling two domains and two hosting accounts for an education provider: one website, one source of truth.
An Australian education provider with two domains, each on a different hosting provider. They were paying for both, needed only one, and couldn’t update the website on either.
Two domains on two separate hosting accounts, one locked out and one out of date, brought onto a single host with both domains showing the same, regularly updated website.
01 — Before
The challenge.
Paying for two of everything
Two domains sat on two different hosting providers, with two bills, when the business only needed one website.
Locked out of one host
For one domain, the client had no access to the hosting account, so they couldn’t make the changes their website needed.
Old content on the other
The second hosting held a much older version of the site that nobody was able to update either.
No source of truth
Depending on which address people used, they saw different, out-of-date information, and nobody was sure which site was the real one.
02 — Our approach
How we approached it.
Audit
Mapped both domains, where each was registered and hosted, who held the logins, and what content each site was showing.
Agree the main domain
Confirmed with the client which domain should be the primary address for the website.
Content review
Compared the two sites and agreed with the client which content was current and what needed updating.
One hosting setup
Set up the website on a single hosting account under the client’s control, on their chosen domain.
Point the second domain
Updated the DNS so the second domain sends visitors to the same website, instead of to its own old copy.
Retire the extra hosting
Once both domains were confirmed working, the hosting the client no longer needed could be cancelled.
03 — The build
What we delivered.
Single hosting account
One home for the website, with access held by the client, so changes are never blocked again.
Primary domain live
The website runs on the domain the client wanted as their main address, with SSL in place.
Second domain redirected
The other domain points to the same website, so anyone using either address sees the same, current content.
Up-to-date content
Outdated pages and information replaced with the client’s current content.
Access documented
Domain, DNS and hosting details recorded and handed over, so there’s no confusion about who controls what.
Regular content updates
An ongoing arrangement where we publish the client’s website updates for them.
04 — After
The results.
- One hosting account instead of two, so the client pays for only the hosting they need.
- Both domains show the same website, so students and families always see current information.
- The client controls the hosting again, so changes are no longer blocked.
- The old, outdated copy of the site is no longer reachable.
- The website is kept up to date with regular content updates from our team.
